🦷 Post-Operative Instructions: Crown Appointment
Thank you for visiting our office today for your crown preparation. You are now wearing a temporary crown until your permanent one is ready. Please follow these instructions to help ensure comfort and the success of your final restoration.
🕒 1. Temporary Crown Care
- Avoid sticky or hard foods (e.g., gum, caramels, hard nuts) that could dislodge or break the temporary crown.
- Chew on the opposite side of your mouth when possible.
- If your temporary comes off, save it and call us. We’ll recement it.
- Temporary crowns are meant to be temporary. They protect the tooth and help maintain position.
🪥 2. Oral Hygiene
- Brush as usual, but be gentle around the temporary crown.
- Floss carefully: Slide the floss out rather than snapping it up to avoid dislodging the temporary crown.
- You may rinse with warm salt water (½ teaspoon salt in 8 oz. water) to help with any soreness.
😬 3. Sensitivity & Discomfort
- Some sensitivity to temperature, pressure, or sweets is normal and should subside within a few days.
- Mild soreness of the gums is common.
- You may take over-the-counter pain relievers (e.g., ibuprofen or acetaminophen) as needed.
💊 4. Anesthesia
- If your mouth is still numb, avoid eating or drinking anything hot until the numbness wears off to prevent biting your lip, cheek, or tongue.
⚠️ 5. When to Call the Office
Contact us if you experience:
- Persistent pain or throbbing after 2–3 days
- The temporary crown becomes loose or falls off
- Swelling, fever, or signs of infection
- Trouble biting or chewing (the bite might need adjustment)
📅 6. Follow-Up Appointment
Don’t forget your next appointment to have your permanent crown cemented. It is important not to delay, as the temporary crown is not a long-term solution.
